Influences & acknowledgments

System-128 is independent work in a long tradition. It acknowledges its debts while treating every inherited mechanism as open to examination.

Personal dynamic media

The Xerox PARC Learning Research Group—especially the work associated with Alan Kay, Dan Ingalls, Adele Goldberg, and their colleagues—demonstrated a live, graphical, reflective, object-oriented environment conceived as a medium for thought. System-128 inherits the ambition, not the name or institutional lineage.

Interaction as complete design

Apple’s early Macintosh work, later human-interface traditions, and research associated with people such as Don Norman sharpened lessons about coherence, feedback, discoverability, mental models, accessibility, consistency, and emotional experience. Power alone does not make an environment usable.

Systems & composition

Unix and Bell Labs traditions contribute small parts, clear contracts, orthogonality, composition, and separation of mechanism from policy. Plan 9, distributed systems, persistent object research, Self, and other live environments extend the conversation about naming, location, prototypes, and scale.

Specification & intent

Design by Contract, requirements engineering such as KAOS and i*, architectural modeling, formal specification, ontology languages, capability systems, and software verification supply vocabulary and techniques for obligations, goals, authority, and evidence.
